It is his money, and he can do what he wants. Some people feel materialistic things make them happy. It doesn't necessairly mean his passion is fake, he still does donate his time and money.

You mean like the CEOs of the Big 3 who flew in on private jets to ask for taxpayer money? The roundtrip of one of those guys could have paid for two years of my college, and they want me to give them a bailout? Why don't they invest some of the tens of millions they got paid just last year in the companies?

Because they are greedy. Begging for charity can be powerful and free publicity. It can further their career mightily.
The good news is that it can be a win-win proposition. They get the publicity. Folks in need get the money and more public awareness of the problem.

Don't you know these Celebs being self-employed are able to gain Tax Relief on ALL Charitable works.
Thats why we see them doing Children In Need and other similar programmes/advertisements on TV.

Why are celebs so greedy, as we know, yet aim for a positive self-image through yearning to give charity to those who need it? Hmmm… Perhaps, in their guilt and shame of their own irresponsibility and selfish money "splurges", those very pop stars offer as much "charity" as they can to try to make up for their childish "I want this, I want that!" misconduct. Most people know, or think they know, the inside life and the secrets of celebs through the media, and they most likely are very aware of the fact. Therefore, by presenting themselves in a more humble manner, they think, may raise their standards over the media to give America the "good side" of their character. Hope I helped… :)
